When You Realize What’s In The Tray She’s Holding, You’ll MELT!

It’s not cupcakes…it’s something MUCH better.

Swaddled in blankies and sucking on their bottles, it’s hard to imagine any mama abandoning these precious baby fruit bats.

Each year, around 300 fruit bat pups are abandoned due to ill or absent mothers.

Luckily for these little guys, who were afflicted with the deadly tick paralysis disease, a group of volunteer heroes at the Tolga Bat Hospital in Atherton, Australia rescued them and nursed them back to health, making sure they were well-fed, snuggly, warm and clean.

1. Researchers have discovered that tick paralysis is one of the reasons so many bats had been disappearing from Atherton Tableland in the 1990s.

2. Each day, the hospital works hard to care for sick and injured bats brought to them. They treat hundreds each year.

3. Snug as bugs in a rug, these babies will be kept at the hospital until they are healthy.

4. Afterwards, they will be released back into the wild.

5. The Togla Bat Hospital not only cares for sick and abandoned bats from miles away…

6. …but provides a home and sanctuary for bats who have retired from zoos.

7. The pups love to suckle on their bottle pacifiers, just like human babies!

8. The Togla Bat Hospital aims to “rescue, rehabilitate and release all species of bats with a high standard of care.”

9. The hospital has also begun to actively search for bats affected by tick paralysis in the wild.

10. Fruit bats, also known as old world fruit bats or Megabats, come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

11. The smallest of fruit bats are just 2.4 inches long, while the largest can weigh up to three pounds!
